2. Retinal prosthetic could restore sight
A retinal prosthetic designed by engineers at the University of California San Diego and Nanovision Biosciences could be used to restore the ability of retinal neurons to respond to light.
Silicon nanowires sense light and electrically stimulate a person’s retina to replicate the light-sensing cones and rods that are in the retina.
A telemetry system transmits power and data from outside of the body to the inside of the retina through inductive coils. It sends and receives 1 bit of data for every 2 cycles of the 1356 megahertz RF signal.
