NeuroMetrix: upgrades for wearable pain relief technology
The drug-free wearable Quell has sold to more than 50,000 chronic pain sufferers since June 2015. It is a lightweight, wearable device that can be worn day and night, active and sleeping. The FDA cleared it as a treatment for chronic pain without the need for a prescription. More than four-fifths of Quell users have reported a reduction in chronic pain, according to the company.
The therapy provided by Quell can be adjusted through its mobile app. Users can start, stop or adjust the therapy levels from their phones. It also provides a sleep tracker that gives the user feedback on sleep duration, quality, body position, time out of bed and leg movements while sleeping.
The device wraps around the user’s calf, similar to a running armband, and has an attached electrode that uses the patented neurotechnology to provide therapy all the time. It stimulates sensory nerves to carry neural pulses to the brain that block pain signals, providing pain relief.
