Wearables may come full circle and make their ways back into the hospital setting.“What exists as hospital equipment is big and clunky. But people put up with it because it’s in a hospital. That hardware is antiquated,” Combs said.
If patients can just have a wearable, it would eliminate the need for all the hardware. The information could also be uploaded wirelessly to any display.
“Imagine how simple it would be if you came into the intensive care unit and instead of having six ECG patches put on, an arterial line placed, a venous line placed and these tubes and wires, you could just put on this patch on a person’s chest. You turn on a flat screen, and there is all was,” Combs said.
