3. SolAlert: Easily gauge your UV exposure every day
Funding goal: $10,000
Total pledged: $49+
Deadline: May 12
SolAlert is a UV-sensitive, color changing sticker created by Propper Manufacturing Co.
The sticker gradually changes from pink to pale yellow the longer the user is exposed to the sun. The sticker lets a user know when they’ve reached the daily 1 Standard Erythemal Dose, which is the standard measurement for ambient ultraviolet rays. When the sticker turns yellow, the user is alerted that they’ve reached the Standard Erythemal Dose threshold.
Scientists created this sticker by first developing a UV-responsive ink. They developed an end point for the color change of 1 Standard Erythemal Dose, which is about the amount of sun known to cause the early stages of sunburn. After several months of working on the ink, the scientists created a formula and printed it on adhesive dots that can be easily applied and removed from clothing, bags, hats and other fabric items.

We would like to learn about raising money for a new electric dental drill we have developed.

Thanks, Alex. We’re not experts on fundraising. (We just write stories about people who are. 🙂 ) You might reach out to some of the people doing these crowdfunding campaigns, ask how things are going for them and whether they have lessons learned. If you have a medical device industry association in your area, they might be able to offer you some tips, too, or forward you to someone who can offer advice. Good luck with your endeavor!
