5. Calm: Wearable ECG for sports and sleep analysis
Funding goal: $10,000
Total pledged: $46,000+
Deadline: May 28
Calm monitors the ECG signal from the heart to help users train safer and sleep better.
Calm’s makers claims it can detect irregular heart rhythms and excess loading with HRV analysis. It also monitors deep sleep efficiency, breathing and recovery and helps as an indicator of focus, stress, relaxation and readiness.
ECG signals from Calm show the shape of each heartbeat and give insight into the physical and mental condition of the heart rather than just using heart rate during physical activity. The data analyzes how hard a user is pushing their body in real time and can alert the user if they are pushing their body too hard.
Calm’s sleep analysis monitors a user’s physical movements and the condition of the heart and lungs during sleep, unlike sleep monitors that are worn on the wrist. Paired with the Calm app, users can see sleep depth breathing rate to determine if they need to change their habits to get a better night’s sleep.
The device itself weighs half an ounce and is attached using a \medical grade Ag/AgCl gel pad when used in moderate activities. It can also be attached with an adjustable stretch fit chest strap for use in vigorous activities.
Calm’s battery can be used for up to 3 days continuously on one charge and is rechargeable through USB. Data gathered from the Calm device can be accessed through the Calm smartphone app.

We would like to learn about raising money for a new electric dental drill we have developed.

Thanks, Alex. We’re not experts on fundraising. (We just write stories about people who are. 🙂 ) You might reach out to some of the people doing these crowdfunding campaigns, ask how things are going for them and whether they have lessons learned. If you have a medical device industry association in your area, they might be able to offer you some tips, too, or forward you to someone who can offer advice. Good luck with your endeavor!
