2017 ESP Award Nominee: Santanello Surgical The Vampiro

October 9, 2017 By Daniel Seeger

The 2017 Excellence in Surgical Products Awards will be presented in the November/December issue of Surgical Products. Leading up to the publication of that issue, nominees will be featured on the Surgical Products website.

Category: Instrumentation

Product description and innovation synopsis:

Santanello Surgical offers the Vampiro, a dual lumen Minimally Invasive Poole Suction Sleeve. It is an ergonomic, intuitive laparoscopic instrument with enhanced suction capabilities that minimizes catheter occlusion and maximizes suction efficiency. The Vampiro is an accessory device to the current spot suction sleeve, increasing the number of apertures and creating a fluid column that is unobstructed by organs, tissue and debris. They estimate the instrument can be used in 30-40 percent of all minimally invasive procedures, specifically in thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic surgeries.

What sets this product apart from others available in the industry?

The only available suction instrument for minimally invasive surgery is the single lumen Spot Suction Catheter, which is frequently occluded by surrounding organs and tissue. This requires additional time and effort to clear the surgical area, and oftentimes complete fluid evacuation cannot be efficiently accomplished. Unlike open surgery, no dual lumen poole suction catheter exists to assist in these circumstances.

How does this product benefit the surgical team and aid in better outcomes?

The product offers 5 major value propositions for the surgeon including: (1) alleviation of the common problem of catheter occlusion by abdominal organs, tissue, and debris; (2) reduced surgeon frustration from occluded, inefficient instrumentation; (3) potentially savings of operating room time, which translates into hospital cost savings; (4) effective removal of contamination and irrigation fluid, which may potentially reduce deep site surgical infections; and (5) an ergonomic design for intuitive, comfortable use.
