According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, the chances of developing a post-surgical wound infection ranges from 1% to 3%.
Here are 3 new surgical wound dressings that could help prevent wound infections:
1. Mölnlycke Mepilex border post-op dressings
The new Mepilex border post-op dressings are designed for incisions. It supports early patient mobilization with its flex-cut pads that stretch in all directions. It can also conform to the body as it moves, according to Mepilex maker Mölnlycke. Using Safetac technology, the wound dressing reduces skin damage and pain while creating a shower-proof seal that allows for longer use and fewer dressing changes. It comes in standard and antimicrobial dressing and contains highly soluble silver that inactivates pathogenic bacteria in 30 minutes. It inactivates 99.99% of common microbial threats for up to 7 days.
2. Acelity VAC Veraflo Cleanse Choice dressing
The VAC Veraflo Cleanse Choice dressing provides rapid cleansing of wounds to augment the healing environment. Without surgical intervention, the wound dressing from Acelity is able to loosen, solubilize, detach and remove viscous wound exudate and infectious materials from the wound. It is made three different layers that help with mechanical movement on the wound surface and provide a secure dressing for wounds.
3. Eloquest Healthcare ReliaTect post-op dressings
Eloquest Healthcare and Vancive Medical Technologies have created a line of transparent post-op dressings called ReliaTect that are designed to help with patient care. The ReliaTect dressings use Vancive Medical Technologies’ adhesive technology called BeneHold CHG to secure the dressings to the skin and absorb fluids from the wound. The wound site is protected from external contamination and preserves the dressings from microbial growth. It is available in small and large sizes and are ideal for use in post-op site management.
