3D-printed insoles help reduce joint pain

Vancouver-based startup Wiivv is creating custom 3D-printed insoles as a solution for people with plantar fasciitis pain, joint discomfort and foot fatigue, according to a recent Worrell article.

Patients can use Wiivv’s insole customization process from the comfort of their own homes and have a unique insole designed for their foot shape by using the company’s mobile application. The insoles can be designed for arch support, foot alignment and step enhancement.

The custom arch and heel cup in the 3D-printed insoles helps with comfort and relieves a variety of foot pathologies, flat feet, high arches, pronation and supination. The arch support can also reduce pressure in the ball of the foot that generally comes from flat feet. The insoles help with reducing plantar fasciitis by supporting the arch. Supporting the arch allows for less pressure going to the ankles, reducing the chance of injury.

Custom insoles align and reduce pressure in the joints. Supporting the foot helps reduce injuries to the ankle, shin, knee, hip and back while reducing pain as well.

To begin, the patient needs to step on a blank piece of 8.5 in. by 11 in. paper with their bare foot. The user then takes a picture of their foot on Wiivv’s app from above and the side.

Users can choose different patterns and colors based on their preference and in seven days will have their custom insoles, ready for use.
