Medical device industry accelerator MedTech Innovator today announced about 50 medtech startups participating in its annual four-month program.
Half are early-stage companies participating in MedTech Innovator’s Accelerator and Showcase program, and the other half are mid-stage companies in the organization’s Showcase program. The list of companies is a who’s who of people around the world who are seeking to create cutting-edge medical device, diagnostic and digital health technologies.
Many of the companies this time around are incorporating something related to artificial intelligence or machine learning into their technology, according to Paul Grand, MedTech Innovator’s founder and CEO. New York-based HealthReveal, for example, is using AI to help provide health providers with diagnostic or therapeutic recommendations.
“Everyone is using AI. It’s just part of what they do now,” Grand told Medical Design & Outsourcing.
MedTech Innovator over seven years has reviewed more than 3,000 early-stage companies, graduating 185 that have gone on to raise more than $1 billion in follow-on funding. Hundreds of medical device industry insiders helped the organization pick the present list of 50 startups. “We’ve been running nonstop since November of last year to get to this point,” Grand said.
The program kicks off June 19 with the MedTech Innovator Summit in San Francisco. Over the program’s four months, the companies have the chance to win cash prizes, scholarships and in-kind awards — culminating in AdvaMed’s The MedTech Conference, Sept. 23–25 in Boston. At The MedTech Conference, five companies from the accelerator cohort will compete in a finale in which a live audience vote will determine the winner of the $350,000 grand prize and the title of 2019 MedTech Innovator.
Companies could also win incubator space at JLABS and the Gore Innovation Center.
