Dental saw
Even with the advancements in medical tools, it’s fair to say that more people dread visiting the dentist than don’t. As comfortable as they try to make it for you, nobody enjoys sharp objects poking at their teeth. Perhaps this final device will make you thankful for the methods used today.
The dental saw, which looks almost like a potato peeler, was designed to cut in between a patient’s teeth to get down to the jaw and, as curator Anna Dhody is quick to note, this was before the days of anesthesia. Ouch.
Many who have had braces have undergone the quick, painful experience of a dentist or orthodontist using a small strip of sandpaper to sand down some space between your teeth. Imagine that, plus the pain of a saw driving through teeth, gums and your jaw.
