The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Million Hearts initiative notes numerous challenges to heart attack survivors’ gaining access to cardiac rehab. They include lower referral rates to people of color, women, older people and non-English speakers. Among its recommendations — web-based or home-based programs for patients who live in rural areas, and telemedicine-monitored cardiac rehab programs for people unable to access traditional programs.
