Post-Revolution American-made kits
This kit is not from the RR Auction, but is part of a private collection at Medical Antiques. It is an interesting kit to compare to the kits from the action because the kit is American-made. The heyday of American-made surgical instruments was from the 1840s to the 1890s. Prior to that, most instruments were made in Europe and imported. After the turn of the century, European and specifically German manufacturers much took over the trade once again.
Some of the most famous makers of the time were Wiegand and Snowden of Philadelphia. These kits were notable by the shape of the blade of the large amputation knives, which have a curved downward shape. This shape is typical of the blades on American surgical instruments made during the early 19th century.
