ALPHARETTA, Ga.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Apr 23, 2013–Carticept ® Medical, Inc., a developer of innovative drug delivery systems, today announced that its patents “Anesthetic Injection System” and “Imaging-Guided Anesthetic Injection Method” were issued today by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). These patents are the fifth and sixth issued in the U.S. covering Carticept’s novel Navigator ® Delivery System technology.
The new patents cover the additional capability of the Navigator to automatically aspirate fluids, a common practice to ensure proper needle placement when delivering nerve blocks and which typically requires the assistance of an additional healthcare professional. These patents add to the patent coverage provided by the Company’s previous four U.S. Patents relating to the Navigator® technology and are part of the Company’s larger portfolio of U.S. and international filings. The Company’s prior patents relate to innovative technology for injecting therapeutics to joints or other targets.
“These new patents continue to broaden our overall intellectual property portfolio and strengthen our patent position in the area of computer controlled injections,” said Timothy J. Patrick, president and chief executive officer of Carticept. “Specifically, these new patents will provide coverage for future use of the Navigator in delivering nerve blocks and other anesthesia procedures, which is currently under development. We believe our technology has the ability to improve significantly the efficiency of peripheral nerve block preparation, delivery and recordkeeping.”
