DTW Podcast: 3 lessons to learn about telesurgery from Doug Teany, COO, Corindus

COO Doug Teany joined Corindus Vascular Robotics in 2016 as senior vice president of R&D and operations. Two years later, the Boston Scientific veteran would step into the role of COO and help guide Corindus through the development of its CorPath GRX interventional robotics system and the $1.1 billion acquisition of the company by Siemens Healthineers (ETR:SHL).

Last week, Corindus was the subject of a documentary reviewing the power and potential of 5G technology. Called “The Speed of Thought,” it documented the first transcontinental interventional procedure performed using Corindus’ CorPath system.

In the current episode of DeviceTalks Weekly Podcast, Teany discussed the documentary and shared several key points, including:

1. Corindus sees a 5G network opening the doors for remote procedures that could save lives, improve patient health and save the healthcare system millions by closing the gap between skilled physicians and critical patients, including those suffering heart attack and stroke.
2. Corindus CEO Mark Toland is leaving the company to join the venture capital firm, BioStar. Teany shares his own plans at the company.
3. Corindus is working with payers to develop an equitable system of reimbursing providers at the two ends of a telesurgery procedure.
