San Diego — Bradley A. Marcus, a doctor of osteopathic medicine, is the founder and operator of Medical Rehabilitation & Kinematics Lab. He is board-certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation.
After extensive research, Dr. Marcus created one of the most modern facilities for motor and gait training in the country. Medical Rehabilitation & Kinematics Lab is among the state-of-the-art facilities in the country for rehabilitation and maximizing performance among people with physical disabilities. It is also the only facility on the West Coast that offers a full motion analysis functional capacity evaluation that accurately measures when an injured employee can safely return to work, which saves businesses money by providing accurate workers’ compensation claims and preventing fraud.
BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY
Essential business philosophy: Karma — put everything you have into your work, and the results will speak for themselves.
Best way to keep a competitive edge: Be the most innovative and modern — both in applied skills and technologies.
Guiding principles: Be creative, logical and help your patients reach their maximum potential.
Yardsticks of success: I measure my success by each patient’s progress and growth.
Goals yet to be achieved: I’ve been lucky enough to reach my goals. So I would like to sustain my current business model and be known as the go-to rehabilitation facility in the world for those with physical disabilities. I would also like to be the go-to resource for workers’ compensation claims. I can potentially save businesses thousands of dollars in fraudulent claims.
JUDGMENT CALLS
Best business decision: Starting my own practice and designing my center to be among the most advanced in the world. It is so rewarding to see my patients achieve results that they thought — or had been told — would never be possible.
Worst business decision: Joining a medical group.
Toughest business decision: Choosing the right financial loan in order to support my new business venture.
Biggest missed opportunity: None yet that I’m aware of, I prefer to only look forward and not live in the past.
Mentor: None. I looked at how unhappy my peers were with how they practiced medicine and decided to do something completely different. So, you could say I had a reverse mentor. I learned what not to do.
Word that describes you: Visionary.
TRUE CONFESSIONS
What you like best about your job: Being a part of making someone do the “impossible.” Helping my patients do everyday activities like feeding themselves or driving, when they could not before — it’s empowering.
What you like least about your job: Paying bills.
Pet peeves: Negative people.
Most important lesson learned: Always follow your heart, even if you don’t know the reason yet.
Person most interested in meeting: Jesus.
OCCUPATION AND WHY
Three greatest passions: Family, medicine, the ocean.
First choice for a new career: There is nothing else that I would do. This was always my dream job. I enjoy showing up to work each and every day. I guess I would like more vacation days. But who wouldn’t?
PREDILECTIONS
Most influential book: I prefer to read textbooks rather than novels. I read about 200-300 pages a day of medical trade journals.
Favorite restaurant: Fleming’s … but I’m happy anywhere that I don’t have to do the dishes.
