FDA Clearance on Beckman Coulter’s Power Express Automated Sample Processing System

September 26, 2014 By Beckman Coulter

Delivering on its commitment to help labs face new challenges in the ever-changing healthcare environment, Beckman Coulter has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance on its Power Express high-speed automated sample processing system.

Designed to meet the needs of the most demanding laboratories, the Power Express processes samples for all core disciplines – chemistry, immunoassay, hematology and coagulation. The Power Express provides the enhanced benefit of connected automation by combining Beckman Coulter’s industry-leading AU clinical chemistry system; the UniCel DxI 800 immunoassay system for high-throughput immunochemistry analysis; third-party connection capabilities, including coagulation; and plans to include Beckman Coulter hematology solutions this year.

“As a pioneer in laboratory automation, we are confident that the addition of the Power Express to our portfolio will provide laboratories with a solution that will help them meet the needs of their patients,” said Helmut Koehler, senior vice president of Workflow and IT Solutions, Beckman Coulter Diagnostics. “The Power Express is designed for reliability and can lead to more predictable turnaround times, resulting in physician satisfaction, increased revenue and reduced costs. With Power Express, labs can meet the increasingly tough expectations to improve their bottom line.”

Built with innovation in mind, the system utilizes intelligent sample management to route samples in the quickest and most efficient manner. Additionally, radio-frequency identification (RFID) tube routing allows for instrument connections on both sides of the track, optimizing specimen transport and leading to a smaller footprint without diminishing capacity. With quality and safety in mind, Power Express provides barcode sample reading at each sample aspiration while maintaining accuracy with positive patient identification.

In order to optimize total solution throughput, all components of Power Express have been designed to operate at the same high-speed pace, thereby eliminating bottle necks at all modules. Additionally, the Dynamic Inlet serves as the highest capacity single-point of entry for samples. It also features refrigerated and ambient storage, and is finished with a specimen automated disposal unit. Combined, these features give labs the ability to deliver rapid and dependable turnaround times to clinicians, reduce errors and improve overall laboratory efficiency and productivity.

Keeping up with the need to generate more revenue with fewer resources, the Power Express system is customized with a scalable, modular layout that can grow with your lab. Strengthened by the combination of instrumentation, automation and information from REMISOL Advance data management, Power Express delivers efficiency, flexibility and innovation to the laboratory.
