HotSpot: Wireless, Connected Chemistry Analyzer

July 2, 2014 By Eric Sorensen, Coordinator of Multimedia Development

GameReality
First, we’re giving GameReality honorable mention. It’s not a recognized winner, but HotSpot typically has four hot spots so we couldn’t leave it at the three winners. That’d just be bonkers. Sweden-based GameReality developed an IP-enabled first person shooter game that allows players to remotely control actual holonomic combat robots over the internet. Think first generation Gamer. Players are given a real time video feed that enables them to control paintball or laser tag equipped robots, which could be in another city or country, and ruthlessly hunt them down.

Ripple
In third place, was Ripple from the U.S. Air Force Discovery Lab. Ripple is a prototype wirelessly networked physiological monitoring system that is designed for use by first responders during mass-casualty incidents. It gathers information using an electrocardiogram, pulse oximeter, and dermal probe sensors. The interdevice communication is built on top of IEEE 802.15.4-based transceiver hardware and 6LoWPAN-based networking software.

Yanzi
Another group of Swedes took second place with Yanzi, a scalable software, IoT cloud platform with highly integrated hardware products that guarantees the user experience, end-to-end. As IoT aims to connect millions of users and places to billions of things. The Yanzi Cloud Software Platform operates on cloud servers and gateways; it collects data, manages devices, and provides processed information to users in real time. It scales to hundreds of millions of users and/or gateways by being distributed over many cloud servers simultaneously.

CenLab
Last, but not least, since they took home a $10,000 check, is grand prize winner CenLab from U.S. company Centero. CenLab is a handheld, wireless, connected chemistry analyzer. It allows for automated, and better yet cost effective, analysis of body fluids and water quality. It eliminates trips to the doctor by providing ubiquitous, instantaneous, urinalysis and blood screening results in the comfort of your own home. They also say on the go, but anything bodily fluid related doesn’t seem to pair well with the on the go spirit. The portable chemical analyzer is a versatile tool for preemptive screening for diseases, as well as monitoring chronic conditions.
