Inaugural 360-Degree Live Stream Surgery Performed in the U.S.

June 21, 2016 By 360fly, Inc.

360fly, Inc., maker of a single-lens camera that captures stitchless 360-degree 4K video, and GIBLIB, an online platform for surgeons to share medical lectures and surgical videos, recently broke new ground with the first live stream broadcast of a United States-based operation in 360-degree 4K video.

Utilizing the mobile live streaming platform, Livit Now, the companies allowed viewers to stream a real-time, 360-degree broadcast from the operating room of hernia specialist, Dr. Shirin Towfigh, a surgeon who is solely dedicated to the treatment of all abdominal wall hernias and their complications.

She worked with 360fly and GIBLIB to make the procedure accessible via live stream interactive video to a private group. It marks the start of a series of live-stream surgical procedures that will be open to medical students and doctors around the world.

Unlike live streaming set-ups that restrict the audience to the surgeon’s single point-of-view, the 360fly camera technology allows viewers to interact with the video by swiping and scrolling to select any perspective desired. To replay the operation, visit www.giblib.com/firstlivestream.

GIBLIB is a multi-channel network devoted 100 percent to the surgical community. It was created to help medical students and doctors, especially those in developing countries and economically poor regions of the world, gain access to surgical content online. The GIBLIB platform allows surgeons to showcase unique techniques and ideas and stay up to date with the latest trends and technologies through collaboration.

The 360fly 4K camera pairs with a free iOS and Android mobile app, which allows users to shoot, edit and share content to popular social media channels, such as YouTube and Facebook. The camera adds a powerful new image sensor that nearly quadruples the resolution of the original 360fly HD camera, shooting in 2880 x 2880. The waterproof camera offers features such as front-facing POV mode, time-lapse mode and has an expanded internal memory of 64GB.
