Invuity® Eigr™ Illumination Technology Showcased at International Congress for Joint Reconstruction Anterior Hip Course

October 2, 2013 By Business Wire

Invuity, a leading developer of advanced visualization devices to optimize minimally invasive and minimal access surgeries, today announced that the 2 nd Annual Anterior Hip Course of the International Congress for Joint Reconstruction (ICJR) featured its Eigr™ Saber Waveguide with Yankauer in all cadaveric lab stations and in two live anterior hip arthroplasty surgeries. Invuity’s device is a handheld illuminator that projects cool, bright white light uniformly throughout the surgical cavity, with the added benefit of a traditional Yankauer suction platform. It significantly improves visualization during anterior hip arthoplasty, especially when working on and around the acetabulum and femoral canal.

The anterior approach to hip arthroplasty is a growing surgical alternative to traditional hip arthroplasty because it is less invasive and tissue sparing, and results in less pain, faster patient recovery and improved mobility.

“The use of smaller incisions in the anterior hip approach can make visualization challenging when using headlights and traditional surgical lighting,” said Dr. Joseph T. Moskal, Professor, Department of Surgery at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute, and ICJR Anterior Hip Course Co-Chairman. “The Eigr Saber with Yankauer illuminates the entire surgical cavity and key anatomical landmarks, making proctoring this approach more effective and enabling me to perform the procedure more efficiently.” Better visualization has proven to increase surgical efficiency, reduce operating room time and lessen surgeon fatigue by eliminating or reducing dependence on a headlight. 1 The thermally cool on-field and in-situ illumination provided by the Eigr Saber Waveguide with Yankauer also provides a safer surgical environment when compared to traditional fiber-optic lighting. 1 “By greatly enhancing the view within the surgical cavity, we are solving a key clinical problem in the growing market for anterior hip arthroplasty,” said Invuity Chief Executive Officer Phillip Sawyer. “Enhanced visualization enables more surgeons to adopt the anterior approach, increasing access to a less invasive procedure that is in demand by patients today.” The ICJR 2 nd Annual Anterior Hip Course was held September 26 to 28 at the Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation and Education (MITIE) in Houston, TX. It offered a comprehensive education on the surgical and patient processes associated with the anterior hip approach, from patient selection through patient recovery and follow-up, and featured a track for surgeons new to the anterior hip procedure, as well as one for those that were experienced.

The Eigr Saber Waveguide with Yankauer is used in a variety of surgical applications, including hip and shoulder arthroplasty, orthopedic trauma and tumor, spine, cardiac, breast and general surgery.
