The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based startup has emerged from stealth mode with a $6.5 million seed round, founder and CEO Roman Stolyarov told Medical Design & Outsourcing.
The device developer is preparing its first product, LambdaGuide, for its initial regulatory submission and plans to move toward FDA 510(k) clearance and prepare for commercial launch over the next 18 months.
The system is designed to provide real-time, sub-millimeter spatial sensing inside the body to help surgeons during minimally invasive and camera-based procedures.
Lambda Surgical is developing its platform to support “digital measurement, instrument guidance, and advanced visualization across a range of surgical procedures over time.”

“In an era of profound machine intelligence and rapidly advancing autonomous capability, the majority of the 300-million-plus surgeries performed each year still rely on video cameras, century-old technology that cannot measure or model its environment,” Stolyarov said in a statement to MDO.
“Surgeons across specialties face the same fundamental limitations: they cannot easily measure anatomical targets, localize instruments, or see beneath the tissue surface,” he continued. “LambdaGuide is designed to solve these problems by bringing real-time digital measurement, instrument guidance, and subsurface visualization into surgery, delivering step-function improvements in precision today and paving the way toward surgical autonomy.”

Lambda Surgical Chief Technology Officer Bo Yang Yu earned a Ph.D. from MIT and has medtech experience from his time at BD, PathAI and Iterative Health. He said the team is “excited to build technology that gives surgery a deeper physical understanding of the operative field.”

Others involved in the effort include Chief Medical Officer Dr. Louis Liou, Head of Development Mark Stolyar, Head of Imaging Erica Mason and medtech vet Todd Usen as a non-clinical advisor.
The funding round was led by Long Journey Ventures and South Park Commons.

“Surgery is entering a moment where advances in sensing, computation, and robotics can finally change what is possible in the operating room,” South Park Commons Partner Dylan Itzikowitz said. “Lambda’s insight is that the next leap in surgical technology starts with giving systems a more precise understanding of the physical environment.”
CORRECTION: This post previously listed Bo Yang Yu as one of Lambda Surgical’s founders because he listed himself as such on LinkedIn, but Roman Stolyarov says he is the sole founder. This post has been updated to reflect that.
