The augmented reality imaging technologies are designed to supplement microscope views to support surgical decision-making and help teach neurosurgical procedures. Leica Microsystems’ approach to vascular fluorescence during neurosurgery, GLOW800 augmented reality fluorescence, is also being showcased at the event.
Other technologies Leica will exhibit include CaptiView HD image injection, 3D visualization and its capabilities to display 3 types of intrasurgical fluorescence.
“Leica Microsystems is and always has been committed to developing innovative new ways to support its customer’s needs and requirements. In delicate neurosurgery, the outstanding optical quality provided by our microscope is not always enough,” said president of Leica Microsystems Markus Lusser in a press release. “This customer pain point motivated us to develop innovative new ways to augment surgical visualization so that surgeons can operate with as much knowledge and confidence as possible.”
The GLOW800 augmented reality fluorescence will combine the near infrared fluorescence imaging with a full visual spectrum of white light to create a single, real-time image. Surgeons will be able to see the white light image with colored near infrared fluorescence without having to switch between white light view and black and white fluorescence images on a microscope.
“Moreover, we ensure these new augmented technologies can be fully integrated into our premium neurosurgical microscope at any time. This gives surgeons and hospitals complete flexibility, protects their investment and helps them remain at the cutting edge when we introduce the next advance in augmented reality imaging,” said Lusser.
CaptiView HD image injection lets surgeons see full high-definition image data from image-guided surgery systems and vascular fluorescence through the eyepieces of Leica microscopes. Neurosurgeons need to look at a screen and away from the surgical field without image injection. CaptiView allows them to work without having to look away.
