Mature US and European coronary artery bypass graft device markets will Shrink through 2021

July 11, 2013 By PR Newswire

According to Millennium Research Group (MRG), the global authority on medical technology market intelligence, declines in isolated coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedures in the United States and Europe will primarily be attributed to the increasing use of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), which is less invasive and offers shorter recovery times. In particular, younger patients or patients with less severe coronary artery disease are increasingly being referred for PCIs.

The average age of patients undergoing CABG procedures is therefore rising, and these patients are more likely to suffer from other heart-related diseases that will also require treatment. As a result, the proportion of CABG surgeries performed at the same time as other procedures, such as open surgical heart valve procedures or surgical ablations, will expand, which will help to sustain overall CABG procedure volumes through 2021.

In the US and Europe, there will be a slight increase in revenues for devices used in endoscopic vessel harvesting (EVH) because they are less invasive compared to traditional vessel harvesting techniques. There are minor differences, however, between the EVH device segments in the two regions. In the US, adoption of EVH devices is already close to saturation; therefore, the shift to premium-priced EVH devices will primarily drive the market.

“In Europe, there is still potential for EVH use to grow because in the past, physicians preferred less expensive traditional methods,” said MRG Analyst Tony Su. “However, as patients and surgeons become increasingly aware of the clinical benefits of EVH devices, their use in CABG procedures will expand.”

Nonetheless, price competition and budget constraints will continue to hinder the largely mature and commoditized CABG device markets in both regions. Major competitors such as Sorin Group, MAQUET, Medtronic and Terumo will be better positioned to compete in this challenging environment and will likely not be threatened by any new entrants.

Millennium Research Group’s US Markets for Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Devices 2013 and European Markets for Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Devices 2013 reports include unit, procedure, average selling price and revenue information, along with market drivers and limiters and a competitive landscape for on-pump coronary artery bypass devices, off-pump coronary artery bypass devices, EVH devices and anastomosis assist devices in the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. Supplemental country coverage is also available for Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine, as well as in aggregate for the rest of the European countries.
