MDO Nitinol Innovations Special Report: Pulsed-Field Ablation

February 3, 2026 By Jim Hammerand

PFA is one of nitinol’s greatest success stories.

Our special report on nitinol-enabled pulsed-field ablation (PFA) devices includes interviews with engineers and device development experts from companies such as Medtronic, Boston Scientific, J&J MedTech and Abbott, which makes the Volt PFA catheter pictured here. [Image courtesy of Abbott]

Pulsed-field ablation (PFA) is driving growth at medical device powerhouses like Medtronic, Johnson & Johnson Medtech, Abbott and Boston Scientific, and they’re all using nitinol for the PFA catheters that treat atrial fibrillation.

Regular readers of Medical Design & Outsourcing know how much we love nitinol. It’s an incredibly useful alloy enabling a wide variety of minimally invasive medical devices, and there’s still so much to learn before we can take full advantage of this medtech metal.

PFA is one of nitinol’s greatest medtech success stories. To help device developers innovate with nitinol, Medical Design & Outsourcing has interviewed engineers, executives and other device experts about the design and development of their PFA systems, as well as some of the questions that remain around safety and efficacy. This special report offers those exclusive insights in a format that’s easy to read, share, and save for future reference.

You may also be interested in our 2025 Nitinol Innovations Special Report, which offers details on how this nickel-titanium alloy is melted, prepped and processed for medical devices across a variety of applications, as well as advice from device developers who are working with nitinol for their latest products. And for a monthly roundup of top nitinol news from Medical Design & Outsourcing and MassDevice, you can subscribe to our free Nitinol Pulse email newsletter.

I’d like to extend my sincere gratitude to all the nitinol experts at OEMs and their industry partners who have graciously lent us their time and expertise for this special report and our ongoing nitinol coverage, and thank the sponsors of this special report for their support.

And of course, thanks to you, the reader, for your time and attention — and the work you do to improve care for patients across the globe.
