Medical Center Cuts Average ER Wait Time by 92 Minutes Using Technology Suite

July 21, 2014 By Geneva Healthcare

The Geneva Healthcare Suite, an innovative technology platform for managing data from cardiac devices, has cut emergency room wait times by an average of 92 minutes at the UC San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center, according to a recent study published in the Academic Emergency Medicine Journal. The UCSD Emergency Departments are using the suite to access data from incoming patients’ implanted cardiac devices such as pacemakers or defibrillators.

“Using the Geneva’s technology platform we have been able to quickly train our ED staff on how to collect information about a patient’s device regardless of the device manufacturer or type of device. We do not have to rely on each manufacturer’s device representative or on different proprietary reporting systems,” said Dr. Theodore Chan, UCSD Chair of the Emergency Medicine.

The Geneva Healthcare Suite was built to make critical cardiac device data more accessible and available at the point of care as more people are entering the healthcare system and using devices to manage and monitor their health than ever before. The suite organizes health data from multiple sources on an intuitive dashboard that makes life-saving information available immediately to all clinicians.

“The key challenge in healthcare today is to take complex data – in this case implantable device data – and make it instantly actionable when it is needed most, at places like the ER, the OR or a cancer center where saving minutes could mean saving lives,” said Dr. Gilanthony Ungab, Geneva Healthcare’s co-founder and chief medical officer. “ERs are becoming a flashpoint area in healthcare as more and more patients are coming to the ER for their primary care. We aim to alleviate the bottlenecks that exist in these settings.”

The UCSD Medical Center has been using the Geneva Healthcare Suite in its Hillcrest and Thornton Emergency Departments since September 2012.

“Geneva organizes and presents the data in a very intuitive dashboard that is consistent across all devices and immediately makes it available to all our clinicians, anytime and anywhere.  We save time by making this critical device available immediately, which allows us to make faster decisions in the ER,” added Dr. Jim Killeen, the Emergency Department’s Director of Information Technology.

Geneva Healthcare continues to expand its presence in Southern California and throughout the United States. The company just completed its first round of financing, raising over $1.8 million. It plans to use the capital to add additional functionality to its Healthcare Suite and expand its sales presence nationally.
