Medical Device Designers Meet Out East

May 18, 2008 By Design World Staff

If you’re in the medical manufacturing industry, the Medical Device (MD&M) East Exposition and Conference is your ticket to see the latest advances, leading suppliers, and technical experts in medical device design and manufacture.

In 1983, exhibitors setup their booths at the MD&M East expo for the first time. Since then, it has grown into one of the world’s largest exhibitions for medical manufacturing, and it is expanding again in 2008 to keep pace with the growth of the U.S. OEM market.

Exhibitors represent a wide variety of technologies, including:  CNC machine tools; production machinery; metal & plastic component; fabrication; electronic; components/subassemblies; adhesives; motors/motion control; packaging equipment/materials; contract manufacturing/outsourcing; an array of services; and more.

Whether you design for anesthesiology and pulmonary medicine; obstetrics and gynecology; dental; ear/nose/throat; physical medicine; radiology; surgery; neurology; and more, this show can give you valuable resources to help you do your job smarter and faster.

A ticket includes complimentary admission to five additional industry-related, co-located shows: EastPack; Atlantic Design & Manufacturing; PLASTEC East; Green Manufacturing Expo; and Automation Technology Expo (ATX) East. The show will also feature special focuses on medical electronics, optics, lasers, and more.

TheExposition will take place on Tuesday, June 3 and Wednesday, June 4, 2008 from 10 AM to 4 PM, and Thursday, June 5, 2008 from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Jacobs K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. The Conference begins on Monday June 2, 2008 and will continue each day from 9 AM to 4 PM until the exposition closes on Thursday.

The following pages look at some of the companies that will be exhibiting at the show.

Visible light cure adhesive

For medical bonding, potting, and sealing applications, Henkel Corporation has introduced a rapid curing, highly-flexiblevisible light-cure adhesive formulation – Loctite 3974. It cures tack-free in seconds and permanently bonds materials with differing coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) (or materials that expand at different rates on exposure to heat). Because it has a Shore hardness of A70 and an elongation of 100%, it easily accommodates substrate expansion and contraction.

The formulation is a low modulus, single-component acrylic adhesive that cures rapidly on exposure to UV or visible light. It can be used on glass, thermoplastic, and metal assemblies that must withstand extreme thermal cycling and environmental exposure.

Non-magnetic interconnect product line

The ClearImage Series from Hypertronics Corp., is a non-magnetic interconnect product line featuring contact kits and cable assemblies for the medical imaging industry. The Series comprises non-magnetic contacts based on the Hypertac Technology, and cable assemblies designed specifically for MRI applications for high definition interconnections in imaging systems, beds, coils, and other associated accessories.

The Series includes offerings for power, signal, and coax – each meeting or exceeding the magnetic permeability requirements for MRI usage. Features include high cycle life and self-cleaning with low insertion force. What’s more, fretting is never an issue because the contacts are not affected by shock and vibration.

They come in various combination kits to fully accommodate R&D projects for system to coil interconnects, internal coil and bed applications, and intermediary interconnect systems. Hypertronics’ cable assemblies come preloaded with non-magnetic Hypertac contacts in 8, 16, 32, and 64 channel designs.

Small bore connector for medical tubing

The SRC connector from Colder Products Company is a small bore connector for medical tubing applications. It is designed to eliminate potential misconnections that can occur with luer fittings. What’s more, it allows tubing rotation to prevent accidental disconnections or kinked tubing. The connector suits a range of liquid media and gas applications, such as blood and bodily fluid handling and air-driven devices.

The connector has a secure latch design, and it is easy to implement – users simply push the two halves together until they hear a “click” for added assurance of a secure, leak-free connection.

The SRC connector has a dual elastomeric seal that is integral to the body. It creates a smooth, gap-free flow path for improved flow characteristics eliminating areas where fluid could collect. It is made from Class VI materials and can withstand gamma, e-beam, and EtO sterilization.

Configurable Component Tech Seminar

Misumi USA, Inc., will display its newest products for factory automation, including single-axis actuators, linear shafts, linear guides, locating pins, aluminum extrusions, rollers, and more. Most Misumi components are configurable, with downloadable CAD files and full specs available at the company’s website.

Also, during the show, on the first level of convention center in Hall 1E, the company will conduct its Configurable Component Technical Seminar to demonstrate the advantages of configurable components to machine, equipment, and assembly system. Substantial cost and time savings will be documented through real-world examples, showing how the unique Misumi business model assists customers with configured components, in quantities as low as a single piece, with no tooling cost, no minimum order requirement and, in many cases, the option of same day shipment.

Design capability for ceramic components

Polymer Technologies, Inc., (PTI) will feature a new design capability for ceramic components. The PPC precision ceramic machining and extrusion techniques to extruded rods, tubes, and irregular shapes held to sub-micron tolerances have an extraordinary level of concentricity, eccentricity and end-to-end straightness. Ceramics, known for their thermal and electrical insulating capabilities, as well as materials that are biocompatible and transparent to certain radio frequencies, can be used in this process.

Geometries that can be achieved through this new technology, that before now were not available, include holes as small as 10 µm (0.0004 in.); outer diameters from 0.3 to 5 mm; lengths from 0.5 to 100 mm; and wall thickness from 100 µm to 2.49 mm. Holes can be custom configured (need not be round). Tubes can be multi-lumen. Surface roughness can be less than 0.1 µm.

Practical medical applications include implantable devices, including those required to send or received radio transmissions, or devices requiring a small orifice that will not erode, or multi-lumen tubes or custom configurations.
