MPR is proud to announce Innovative Trauma Care’s iTClamp device was named the gold winner in the ‘Critical Care and Emergency Medicine Products’ category of the 2016 Medical Design Excellence Awards. The winners were announced at a ceremony in NYC in conjunction with the Medical Device & Manufacturing East conference.
Dr. Dennis Filips, co-founder of Innovative Trauma Care, is a trauma surgeon who spent 20 years in the Canadian armed forces. He saw first-hand the limitations of existing technology to control bleeding from trauma wounds. Seeing a need, Dr. Filips created the iTClamp, a hemorrhage control device for use in the extremities, axilla, groin, scalp and neck. The iTClamp rapidly controls bleeding by closing and sealing the edges of the wound to mitigate further blood loss until the wound can be surgically repaired. Applied in seconds with minimal pain to the patient, the iTClamp is ideal for emergency medical and military applications.
“Memphis Fire has been a longtime user of the iTClamp, and we continue to be very pleased with the product. We have found it easy to teach and use, effective, and a great addition to our toolbox,” Joe Holley, MD, FACEP, DABEMS the EMS Medical Director for Memphis and Shelby County Fire Departments’ said.
“MPR was given a functional concept,” Eric Claude, VP of MPR Product Development said. “But in order for it to be successful the cost to manufacture the device needed to be lower.” To reach this goal, MPR invented a novel double ratchet mechanism, providing fine rational positioning of the clamp when closed. The mechanism can be manufactured using low-cost plastic molding processes. Tested with a group of Baltimore based EMTs, MPR also incorporated unique features to improve usability of the device.
“When Innovative Trauma Care came to us with the challenge of making its next generation product more effective from a usability standpoint, and less expensive to manufacture, we were immediately interested,” Mr. Claude said. “After discovering this product can potentially save countless lives, we were thrilled with the opportunity to help Innovative Trauma Care meet their goals.”
