HoverTech International, the leader in air-assisted safe patient handling, recently announced their new line of highly breathable HoverMatt Single-Patient Use (SPU) air transfer mattresses featuring fabric that exceeds the market standards for breathability. This enhancement protects the integrity of the patient’s skin by minimizing heat and moisture buildup.
With the HoverMatt SPU, caregivers can safely transfer, turn and position patients without lifting or straining, as a cushion of air beneath the inflated device reduces the force required to move a patient by 80-90 percent. The HoverMatt SPU also eliminates shear and reduces friction, protecting the patient’s skin and giving them a more comfortable experience.

As owner Dave Davis explains, “Since we first released the HoverMatt Single-Patient Use 10 years ago, fabric technology has improved. Although there have been no reported skin issues related to the several million HoverMatt SPUs that have been used over that time, a market leader always aspires to continue to improve. This latest product development reflects our commitment to innovation, driven by caregiver and patient needs.”
In 2008, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services stopped providing reimbursement for hospital acquired pressure injuries, making healthcare facilities particularly sensitive to pressure injury prevention. Reducing exposure to shear and friction, as well as ensuring patients are on highly breathable products, are recognized as key factors in promoting healthy skin. The new highly breathable HoverMatt SPU addresses these factors to improve patient safety and satisfaction.
