New Interim Leadership for USP-Brazil

January 31, 2011 By Bio-Medicine.Org

ROCKVILLE, Md., Jan. 31, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — To
further its continuing partnerships with Brazilian public health
authorities and pharmaceutical manufacturers, the U.S.
Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) has appointed Mr. Nelson dos Santos
as interim vice president of its Sao Paulo, Brazil facility. USP is
a scientific nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the
health of people around the world through standards and related
programs that help ensure the quality, safety and benefit of
medicines and foods. With global headquarters based in Rockville,
Md., worldwide USP locations in addition to Brazil include Basel,
Switzerland; Hyderabad, India; and Shanghai, China.

In his new role, Mr. dos Santos will oversee direction of USP’s
Brazilian laboratory facility and outreach, acting as liaison to
industry and government and regulatory authorities. Mr. dos Santos
replaces Flavio Vormittag, M.D., who led USP-Brazil from its
inauguration in 2008 until December of 2010.

Mr. dos Santos joined USP-Brazil as director, quality assurance
and regulatory affairs in January 2008. Prior to that, Mr. dos
Santos spent eight years at Federacao Brasileira das Industria
Farmaceutica (Febrafarma), the industry trade organization that
brings together 15 corporate associations and unions of the
Brazilian pharmaceutical industry.

He holds an undergraduate degree in Pharmacy and Biochemistry
from Faculdade de Ciencias Farmaceuticas, Universidade de Sao
Paulo, Brazil. In 2007, he also earned an Executive MBA for the
Pharmaceutical Industry at Fundacao Getulio Vargas.

“We are pleased and excited to appoint Mr. dos Santos to his new
role,” said V. Srini Srinivasan, Ph.D., head of USP’s global sites.
“Having worked with Mr. dos Santos for more than three years, we
are confident that the depth and scope of his expertise in the
pharmaceutical industry will continue to be an enormous asset to
our work with those companies and in conjunction wit
