New White Paper Discusses the Precision and Efficiency the BoneScalpel Ultrasonic Bone Cutting System Offers Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic Surgeons

April 20, 2012 By AxoGen, Inc.

CENTER VALLEY, Pa.–(BUSINESS
WIRE
)–According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons
(AANS), over 320,000 spinal procedures out of some 550,000, or 58%, require
some type of bone cutting.1 Traditionally, bone removal in spinal surgeries has
been performed by hand instruments or cutting burrs that, by virtue of their
mechanism of action, pose risks of dural and neural injury, the Aesculap ultrasonic osteotome, BoneScalpel, reduces these risks. Additionally, the BoneScalpel reduces bone bleeding, produces precise cuts as
narrow as approximately 0.5 mm, and provides the surgeon an alternate surgical
technique; potentially increasing efficiency and reducing O.R. time. A white
paper, titled BoneScalpel™ Ultrasonic Bone Cutting System: Neurosurgical and
Orthopaedic Applications, is now available that discusses the technology
behind the BoneScalpel as well as successful clinical trials.

The Aesculap BoneScalpel combines important safety and control
aspects associated with hand instruments with the convenience and ease of
powered instruments. The ultrasonic blade enables precision osteotomies and
en-bloc bone removal while facilitating the sparing of soft tissues and
reducing bleeding. This allows for a new level of efficacy in performing
osseous resection with the opportunity to modify surgical technique and shorten
operating room (O.R.) time. Studies have shown that in spine surgery, the BoneScalpel is used to cut vertebral elements while
protecting the underlying dura and neural structures. The relative selectivity
for bone destruction allows for efficient and systematic removal of bone in
spine operations. This paper reports a set of such data for a number of
surgical applications with the Aesculap BoneScalpel. The BoneScalpel is manufactured by Misonix, Inc.

Authored by Peyman Pakzaban, MD, FAANS of Houston
MicroNeurosurgery, the paper is available for exclusive download at www.aesculapusa.com/bonescalpel. Additional surgical videos
demonstrating the technique are also available.
