Nipro launches 2nd-gen guidewire, OTW balloon cath in U.S.

February 19, 2016 By Fink Densford

NiproNipro Medical said this week it launched its Cronus HP high-pressure over-the-wire balloon catheter and its AquaLiner II 2nd-gen hydrophilic nitinol guidewire in the U.S.

The Japanese company’s Chronus HP is a 0.035″ percutaneous transluminal angioplasty balloon catheter with indications for percutaneous transluminal angioplasty in the femoral, popliteal, iliac and renal arteries for treating obstructive lesions in native or synthetic arteriovenous dialysis fistulae.

“Cronus HP provides physicians with a high-pressure PTA balloon catheter, specifically designed to successfully balloon the most resilient stenoses that are typically resistant to expansion, while being flexible enough to conform to natural vasculature of native fistulae. This is particularly important at and across the anastomosis, where less vessel straightening leads to minimal vascular damage and superior outcomes,” Nipro interventional national sales manager John O’Connor said in a prepared statement.

The company said its Chronus HP has an average rated burst pressure of 26 atmospheres across the size matrix, and the semi-compliant balloon aids in minimizing balloon elongation and the “dog bone” effect.

The device features laser bonding at critical flex points and low profiles along its catheter shaft for improved tracking and pushability, the company said.

“Optimal blood flow dynamics are critical for maintaining treatment adequacy in patients with native AV fistulae of synthetic AV grafts. Nipro is committed to manufacturing products that give physicians the added tools necessary for procedural success and lower treatment times, minimizing post-procedural complications and bringing overall superior outcomes,” Nipro North America senior veep Joe Dawson said in a press release.

The new balloon cath comes in a range of lengths and diameters for treating focal, as well as diffuse AVF stenoses, Nipro said.

The company’s AquaLiner II guidewire is designed to work with interventional devices such as balloons and stents for treating patients with complex lesions.

“Nipro is continuously looking for ways to innovate and improve their product offering. Our end goal is to always offer safe, easy to use products for the healthcare professional to improve the quality of life of the patient,” Nipro NA senior veep Joe Dawson said in prepared remarks.

Nipro said the AquaLiner II features a kink-resistant nitinol core for improved navigation, and super-elasticity to improve support for interventional devices. The device also features hydrophilic coating for maintained lubricity even through multiple passes and a chemically-engineered tip for smooth, atraumatic insertion and navigation.

The AquaLiner II is available in lengths from 150cm to 260cm with regular or stiff-configured wire and straight or angled tips.
