Orthocare Innovations’ Prosthetic Foot Ankle System Wins 2013 Edison Award

April 29, 2013 By Orthocare Innovations

Thomas Edison’s spirit for discovery is alive and well at Orthocare Innovations, which the Edison Awards™ has recognized with its top award in the Science and Medicine–Assistive Device category.

Orthocare won the top award for its Magellan™ microprocessor foot ankle system prosthetic device against tough competition, finishing ahead of products in the category from companies including Medtronic.

Edison Awards recognizes ideas at the forefront of new products, services, marketing, design and innovation. Organizers say being honored with an Edison Award is one of the highest accolades a company can receive in the name of innovation and business.

Magellan brings a novel approach to lower limb prosthetics by mimicking key features of the human ankle that are essential to normal gait. Magellan offers active ankle function using microprocessor computer control, combined with advanced, micro-hydraulic technology, providing persons who have lost limbs with enhanced efficiency, stability and comfort.

A key innovative feature is Magellan’s connectivity, linking the device to its user and the user’s health care providers. This functionality, afforded by iPhone and iPad apps and Bluetooth technology, enables patients to make adjustments to the Magellan themselves, such as adaptations to account for changes in footwear. This functionality also extends to health care providers, affording access to patient performance and device diagnostics.

“It is a tremendous honor to be named a Gold winner in this year’s Edison Awards competition,” commented Doug McCormack, CEO and co-founder of Orthocare Innovations. “The recognition for Magellan is testament to our company’s fearless approach to aggressively confronting the most challenging issues of patient mobility. We are eager to improve the function of persons who have lost limbs through global distribution of this exciting new product.”

Orthocare’s nomination was vetted by members of the Edison Award Steering Committee, who present a slate of finalists to the Panel of Judges. The panel is comprised of more than 3,000 senior business executives and academics from across the nation, whose votes acknowledge excellence in meeting the award criteria: concept, value, delivery and impact.

The Edison Award continues a series of high profile awards and recognitions for Orthocare’s achievements. It previously was named to one of the “Fierce 15” by FierceMedicalDevices and CTIA—The Wireless Association selected Magellan to feature in a current national TV ad and website.
