Plastikos announced today that the second phase of construction on its Plastikos Medical plant will begin this month.
The Erie, Pa.-based company completed the first building in its medical business in 2019 and has added 10 medical injection molding machines since then. The second building will more than double the size of the current ISO-7 cleanroom to 24,000 ft² to accommodate an additional 15 medical injection molding machines to meet increased demand from the medical sector of its business. The company also plans to use more automation and Industry 4.0 principles and technologies to reduce risk and boost quality assurance and production efficiency.
“The success of Phase I was enabled by 10 years of previous cleanroom experience with strategic medical customers, extensive R&D and testing on the latest machine, mold and support technologies to meet our customers’ production demands and quality expectations,” said Plastikos manufacturing manager Robert Cooney in a news release. “Looking ahead toward the Phase II plans, it is exciting to take these advances to another level in what we have collectively learned since Phase I has been operational.”
The parent company plans renovations to house eight whiteroom machines in a stand-alone ISO-8 cleanroom environment to meet medical business demand. Once completed, the space will fall under Plastikos’ current ISO 13485 certification and ISO 14698 compliance.
