NEW YORK, September 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ —
Preetha Reddy, Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals, was invited
to attend the United Nations Summit at New York held by the UN
General Assembly for the prevention and control of Non-Communicable
Diseases.
Non-communicable diseases, such as heart attacks and strokes,
cancers, diabetes and chronic respiratory disease, account for more
than 63 percent of all deaths worldwide, killing 36 million people
a year. The two-day meeting on non-communicable diseases marked the
second health topic that the U.N. General Assembly has ever taken
up. The deliberations are towards saving millions of lives and to
stem a proliferation of chronic diseases that could cost the global
economy trillions of dollars if left unchecked.
Sharing her insights on NCDs, Preetha Reddy, Managing
Director, Apollo Hospitals, said, “Our nation needs to put in
place a robust national protection programme against NCDs and this
is needs to be done on top priority. As pointed out by research,
over 60% of the deaths in India are due to NCDs and it is vital
that our country provides adequate services to those affected by
these diseases and also takes strong steps to encourage prevention
of the diseases. The modern lifestyle has catalyzed a rapid surge
of NCDs and this also has an economic bearing as a 10% rise in NCDs
is associated with 1% lower rate on annual economic growth.”
“We need holistic solutions to tackle non communicable
diseases,” added Preetha Reddy.
