Laboratory instrument manufacturer Rainin has purchased a new 93,240-square-foot facility in Vacaville, California to expand its manufacturing operations.
Oakland-based Ranin plans to open the facility this summer with 60 employees and grow that figure to 100 over time. The building at 4790 Midway Road near Interstate 505 was developed by LDK Ventures as the second phase of its NorthBay Logistics Center in Vacaville’s Interchange Business Park.
Rainin paid $20.25 million for the 9-acre property, according to the San Francisco Business Times. The building has 30-foot-tall ceilings, 17 dock-high doors and four knock-outs listed in marketing materials.
Vacaville is trying to attract biomanufacturing and medical device businesses to complement nearby facilities operated by Genentech, Janssen, Polaris Pharmaceuticals and RxD Nova Pharmaceuticals.
“The high cost and scarcity of real estate in the central Bay was one of the key considerations in our decision to expand operations here,” Rainin GM Werner Maas said in a news release.
The city identified 300 acres available for development of an estimated 3 million square feet of biomanufacturing space in October 2020, and launched a Biotechnology Fast Track permitting program to accelerate building projects.
Lexington, Massachusetts-based Agenus purchased a 120-acre Vacaville site on 1-505 last year to build a 72-acre biomanufacturing campus, though it’s not clear when that will open.
And last month, the city announced a deal with Transwestern Ventures to develop a 390,000-square-foot biomanufacturing campus on 22.4 acres at the nearby Vaca Valley Business Park.
“As we continue to attract more biomanufacturing and medical device companies, Rainin will help to strengthen the city’s biotech ecosystem,” Vacaville Mayor Ron Rowlett said in the news release.
Rainin makes liquid handling instruments and consumables for the life sciences industry. It’s a subsidiary of Greifensee, Switzerland-based Mettler Toledo (NYSE:MTD), which reported more than $3.7 billion in global sales for calendar 2021.
