Self Regional Healthcare Becomes First in the Southeast to Treat Spine Patients Using Advanced Integrated Operating Room Technology From Brainlab

October 6, 2010 By Bio-Medicine.Org

WESTCHESTER, Ill., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ — Surgeons at Self
Regional Healthcare’s South Carolina Spine Center in Greenwood, SC
are now treating patients with a variety of spinal conditions in
its new advanced surgical operating room (OR) featuring
Brainsuite® iCT from Brainlab.

Already recognized by leading health care ratings organization
HealthGrades as a five-star rated spine program, Self Regional
continues its commitment to advanced spinal care by becoming the
first institution in the Southeast to use this highly advanced OR
technology.

Neurosurgeons Dr. Michael Kilburn and Dr. Sumeer Lal have
treated more than 30 patients using Brainsuite iCT since the
advanced OR opened on July 19. The first patient was experiencing
severe and radiating lower back pain. After the surgeon performed a
lumbar spinal fusion involving the L5 S1, the patient was able to
return home after a brief hospital stay and is well on their way to
a full recovery.

“Integrating navigation with diagnostic quality intra-operative
images offers tremendous benefit to our patients,” noted Dr. Lal.
“We can perform with a higher level of accuracy in terms of
instrument placement, supported by the ability to check that a
surgical outcome has been achieved prior to concluding the
procedure. This advanced technology has taken our OR to the next
level.”

Brainsuite iCT is a digitally integrated OR that combines
image-guided surgery (IGS), with a multi-slice intra-operative
computed tomography scanner (iCT) and comprehensive OR data
management. The CT travels on rails over the OR table, providing
high-quality intra-operative scanning without waking the patient
from anesthesia. It drives access to real-time imaging and enriched
patient data that surgeons can use to make timely and informed
decisions, as well as obtain pre-closure verification of results.
Brainsuite iCT can be used for neuro, spine, ENT,
cranio-maxillo-facial, trauma and orthopedic surgeries.
