Sony DADC and Maven Biotechnologies to Develop Smart Consumables for Novel Label-Free Detection

December 9, 2011 By AxoGen, Inc.

SALZBURG, Austria & MONROVIA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sony DADC BioSciences and Maven Biotechnologies today announced a collaboration to develop and manufacture smart consumables for Mavens LFIRE™ detection platform.

LFIRE™ stands for Label-Free Internal Reflection Ellipsometry. It is a flexible and cost-effective, real-time imaging technology for performing cell-based assays and multiplexed biomarker detection. In 2010, the National Institute of Health (NIH) awarded Maven a $1.96 million grant to commercialize the technology.

“The collaboration with Maven provides a perfect example of how we can translate our experience in micro-structured engineering, gained through our pioneering optical disc work, to the needs of the life sciences industry,” says Ali Tinazli Ph.D., Director of Business Development & Sales North America of Sony DADC. “We are particularly pleased to work with Maven at such an early stage, which ensures solutions that will be scalable and traceable, to smooth the way to future regulatory approvals in the clinical space. The product is an advanced polymer slide that can be produced in mass quantities and still guarantee high optical quality.”

Jeffrey Chongsathien, Mavens Chief Engineering Officer said “We are excited to be working with Sony DADC to develop innovative consumables for our LFIRE™ platform. With Sony DADC’s expertise in creating highly scalable and sophisticated optical media, we ensure that our customers will receive the maximum benefits of using LFIRE™ technology and at a lower cost per data point.”

Claudia Lee Ph.D., Head of Biophysics R&D, added “The high quality molding and optical coating expertise provided by Sony DADC is essential to the realization of the Maven consumable. Furthermore, the complimentary interaction with their engineering experts has stimulated innovative technology development at Maven.”
