Sunrise Labs, Velico Medical collaborate for on-demand plasma

March 12, 2019 By Danielle Kirsh

sunrise-velicoSunrise Labs (Bedford, N.H.) recently announced that it is collaborating with Velico Medical (Beverly, Mass.) to develop the Frontline ODP (on-demand plasma) system for spray drying human plasma.

The system allows blood centers to spray dry plasma instead of freeze plasma for transfusion, extending the availability of life-saving plasma for transfusion, according to the company.

FrontlineODP is expected to be available to regional blood centers to make dry plasma for transfusion in bleeding patients. It works by rehydrating with sterile water at the point-of-care in less than five minutes. The companies say it is easy-to-use and is a good addition to a trauma care toolkit.

Through the agreement, Sunrise Labs will design the Frontline ODP spray drain instrument and build and test prototypes. Both Velico and Sunrise Labs will test the system to make sure it meets clinical and regulatory requirements.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to help save lives. Sunrise is both honored and proud to play a leading role in bringing this technology to the market,” Eric Soederberg, president and CEO of Sunrise Labs, said in a press release.

Once the system is cleared by the FDA, the system will be commercialized and marketed to blood collection and processing centers.

“We could not have better, more collaborative and capable partners, and it shows in the work,” Bill Skillman, president and CEO of Velico Medical, said.
