The North Star State is one of three major medical device hubs in the U.S., the other two being California and Massachusetts. Dayton noted in his proclamation that Minnesota’s Medical Alley is home to more than 15,000 health establishments, including six Fortune 500 health technology companies, providing more than a half million high-quality jobs.
Medtronic has its operational headquarters in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, 3M and Smiths Medical are based there, and Abbott (which acquired St. Jude Medical) and Boston Scientific both have major presences.
“Medical Alley’s unique contribution to health care delivery and management, medical technology invention, innovation, and entrepreneurship have earned it recognition as the global center for healthcare innovation and care,” Dayton said.
