Medtech M&A deals continue

Mergers and acquisitions continue at a strong pace among medical device companies, as well as the contract manufacturers that supply them. Perhaps the most notable M&A story involves a potential deal that has not been officially confirmed yet: Medtronic’s reported interest in selling its $5 billion medical supplies business.

Here are other M&A stories from the first quarter of 2017 that are worth noting:

  • Abbott Laboratories closed on its $25 billion acquisition of St. Jude Medical;
  • Johnson & Johnson said it would pay $30 billion to buy Swiss biotech firm Actelion;
  • Johnson & Johnson closed its $4.33 billion purchase of Abbott Labs’s Abbott Medical Optics business;
  • Acelity closed the $2.9 billion sale of its LifeCell regenerative medicine business to Allergan;
  • Allergan said it would acquire Zeltiq Aesthetics and its portfolio of body-contouring products for $2.48 billion;
  • Hologic completed the $1.85 billion sale of its stake in the Procleix blood-screening business to Barcelona-based Grifols, which ran Procleix with Hologic;
  • Hologic closed its $1.65 billion acquisition of Cynosure and its portfolio of medical aesthetic products and devices;
  • Integra LifeSciences made a $1.05 billion cash bid for Johnson & Johnson’s Codman Neurosurgery unit;
  • Teleflex’s $1 billion takeover of Vascular Solutions closed after Vascular Solutions shareholders approved the deal;
  • ICU Medical closed its $900 million buy of the Hospira infusion pump business from Pfizer;
  • Nordson and MedPlast are each acquiring a piece of Vention Medical in the latest M&A deal to transform the medical device contract manufacturing landscape. Nordson (Westlake, Ohio) will pay $705 million in cash to buy Vention’s advanced technologies division, while MedPlast (Tempe, Ariz.) is meanwhile purchasing Vention’s device manufacturing services division for an undisclosed sum;
  • Edwards Lifesciences finished its $690 million buyout of Valtech Cardio, which included most of the heart valve repair technologies Valtech was developing;
  • Covidien spinout Mallinckrodt completed the sale of its nuclear imaging business to IBA Molecular – a $690 million deal;
  • Hill-Rom closed its $290 million acquisition of Mortara Instrument;
  • Integra LifeSciences closed its $205 million acquisition of Derma Sciences and its wound care products portfolio;
  • Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon subsidiary closed its acquisition of Torax Medical (Shoreview, Minn.) and its Linx acid reflux treatment portfolio. Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed;
  • GE Healthcare paid an unspecified amount to acquire U.K.-based Monica Healthcare and its line of wearable, wireless fetal monitors.
