TORONTO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–According to Millennium Research Group (MRG), the global authority
on medical technology market intelligence, the obstetrics/gynecology (OB/GYN)
ultrasound system segment of the overall womens health imaging system market
in the United States will be fueled by the uptake of midrange ultrasound
systems, including compact systems. Such systems are relatively affordable and
will be adopted among budget-conscious non-hospital facilities, boosting
overall ultrasound system unit sales.
In 2011, the US OB/GYN ultrasound market was valued at
nearly $225 million, and will grow to $260 million by 2016. Demand for
ultrasound systems is largely driven by a rising volume of fetal imaging
procedures. The average number of ultrasounds per pregnancy has increased from
1.5 in the 1990s to 2.7 in 2006.
Growth of unit sales for high-end ultrasound systems will
decline through 2016, as a result of competition from midrange ultrasound
systems. Technological improvements have narrowed the gap between compact
systems and larger high-end systems. Cheaper and smaller, midrange systems are
increasingly used in crowded environments such as labor and delivery wards and
emergency departments.
The OB/GYN ultrasound system market comprises both
multimodality and ultrasound-only vendors. Multimodality vendors such as GE
Healthcare, Philips Healthcare and Siemens Healthcare are the largest players
in this mature market, with GE Healthcare alone having a share of over 40
percent.
“Despite the dominance of a few large players, there is
still room for companies to enter this market, particularly with portable
systems, where physicians have not yet established firm preferences,” said MRG
Senior Analyst Isuru Silva. “Samsung Medison is an ultrasound-only vendor that
has excelled through continual product innovation, with a particular focus on
improving 3-D ultrasound imaging. Esaoate North America, while currently a
smaller player, is a leader in providing ultrasound imaging education programs
to both physicians and technicians, which will increase its visibility in the
market.”
