Valencell Launches Major Firmware Update To Its Benchmark™ Biometric Sensor System

Valencell, the leading innovator in performance biometric data sensor technology, announced today a series of updates for its Benchmark™ sensor system, the world’s first highly-accurate, biometric sensor package that incorporates Valencell’s PerformTek® biometric technology in a pre-packaged module for immediate integration into wearables of all kinds. The enhancements, which are also available for Valencell’s PerformTek licensing customers, enable a more seamless and flexible integration of Valencell sensor technology into wearable and hearable designs for a wide variety of use cases.

Key new updates include:

  • Firmware upgradability enables future updates to the firmware and other code upgradable with no new hardware required for code changes. This includes the ability to perform over-the-air updates for devices that support it.
  • I2C and UART communication interface protocols in one SKU, enabling the flexibility to use two different protocols in the same hardware and firmware.
  • Expanded set of activity recognition capabilities for Benchmark and licensing models. Supported activities now include step counting, walking, cadence, cycling, running, swimming, and lifestyle – all in one algorithm set. Valencell has also enhanced its lifestyle mode, which enables more accurate daily activity tracking and improved motion tolerance for lifestyle activities such as typing.
  • Customer access to raw accelerometer data. Customers can now access the raw accelerometer data collected through the sensor system to leverage the data for other uses, such as step counting or other activity recognition, without the need to add a second accelerometer.

“These recent technology updates support Valencell’s longstanding commitment to accuracy and seamless integration of our PerformTek biometric sensor technology for wearables and hearables,” said Dr. Steven LeBoeuf, president and co-founder of Valencell. “Whether licensing our technology for a custom build, or integrating our Benchmark sensor system, Valencell delivers the most accurate biometric sensor systems in the world, accurately measuring everything you need to measure, in any form factor. With Valencell, you just know that it is going to work.”

Valencell’s PerformTek sensor systems provide accurate, robust and flexible technology, powering more biometric hearables and wearables on the market than any other company. The technology gives hearable and wearable devices the ability to continuously and accurately measure blood flow signals, even during extreme physical activity or when the optical signals are weak. These signals can be translated into biometric data, including continuous heart rate, VO2 and VO2 max, RR interval, resting heart rate, heart rate response, heart rate recovery, continuous energy expenditure (calorie burn), cardiac efficiency and heart rate variability assessments.

Valencell licenses its biometric sensor technology through product licensing and patent licensing, to enable customers to create custom-designed biometric hearable and wearable devices. Valencell also introduced Benchmark, a turnkey biometric sensor system with the complete PerformTek technology package ready for immediate integration into wearable and hearable devices.

The accuracy of Valencell’s PerformTek technology has been independently validated by numerous research institutions, including Duke University, NC State University, and the American College of Sports Medicine.

Valencell has a highly cited patent portfolio in optical biometric sensor technology in the wearables and hearables industry, which includes 37 patents granted and more than 70 additional patents pending.

Valencell’s PerformTek technology is the choice of popular consumer electronics brands, including Bose, Samsung, Sony, LG, Intel/SMS Audio, Jabra, Scosche, Atlas Wearables, Caeden, Kuaiwear, Bioconnected, and iriver among numerous others.
