There have been numerous advances in science with the goal of giving sight back to the blind, but a neuroscientist’s research project seems to have found the solution. Sheila Nirenberg is a MacArthur Fellow, and on the foundation’s website it described her work:“Instead of trying to replace the lost photoreceptor cells—an approach that is usually quite invasive and that has shown limited benefit for advanced stage disease—Nirenberg has developed a method for bypassing the damaged photoreceptor cells entirely and interacting directly with the ganglion cells.”
