West Pharmaceutical Services, an injectable drug administration technology provider, has introduced two new products meant to improve drug delivery safety.
The LyoSeal cap is all-plastic and provides instant sealing for lyophilized drug products. West designed the LyoSeal to minimize risks involved with established lyophilization processes while maintaining the necessary sealing requirements.
The NovaGuard SA Pro safety system, which is pending 510(k) clearance in the United States, is meant to protect healthcare professionals, patients who self-inject, and individuals who assist self-injecting patients from accidental needlesticks.

West boasts that the LyoSeal, which is made of medical-grade polypropylene, enables complete container closure in the chamber during the lyophilization process and solves several problems:
- Immediate vial closure in the chamber protects vacuum and headspace;
- Stoppers don’t stick to the shelf because there’s buffering between the stopper and chamber shelves;
- The spring force design reduces the risk of glass breaking in the chamber.
Healthcare providers and others meanwhile can deploy the NovaGuard SA Pro system using a single-handed technique. West also designed the NovaGuard to prevent pre-activation during handling. The NovaGuard is also compatible with ISO 1mL long glass-staked needle syringes and is transparent for ease of drug inspection and delivery.
