Wright Medical Hip Lawsuit Update: New Video Informs Patients Why Profemur Z Hip Implant Is Allegedly Failing

May 17, 2013 By the Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–May 17, 2013–Kent Klaudt, an injury lawyer at the national plaintiffs’ law firm Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP, announced that Lieff Cabraser released today a video on the injuries suffered by hip replacement patients who received the Profemur Z hip made with titanium metal alloy, manufactured by Wright Medical Technology, Inc. The video can be seen on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekkSzDZ0CIc.

“While Wright Medical never issued a recall of its Profemur Z titanium hip implant, far too many patients implanted with the device prior to 2009 have suffered complete failure of the device, requiring often painful revision surgery,” stated Klaudt.

Wright Medical marketed the Profemur Z hip replacement system as being a more durable product than other artificial hip implants, and one especially suited for persons with active lifestyles. Injury lawsuits against Wright Medical charge that as early as the year 2000, when Wright Medical first sold the Profemur Z system with a titanium neck, the company was aware that its titanium components would present an unreasonably high risk of fracture and failure, particularly in physically active and/or heavier persons.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration required that all manufacturers of metal hip implants conduct clinical studies on the safety and effectiveness of the devices if the metal hip implants had been brought to the market without having first been subject to such studies. The FDA’s action was prompted by significantly higher failure rates in all-metal hip implants than ones made of plastic or ceramic materials.

In response, as reported yesterday, Johnson & Johnson’s DePuy unit announced that it is taking all of its metal hip implants off the market. J&J and DePuy, however, continue to deny any legal responsibility for the suffering alleged by patients who received DePuy metal hip implants and had to undergo often painful revision surgery to replace the implants after they failed.
