Brainlab: Fastest Growing Radiosurgery Platform over the Last Decade Continues to Perform

April 9, 2014 By the Associated Press

Brainlab announced today that well over 1,000,000 patient treatments have been performed with Novalis to date and the growth in non-invasive specialized radiation therapy techniques is expected to grow at a faster pace than other treatment alternatives. The most effective radiosurgery program for the last 15 years, Novalis Radiosurgery has been used in more stereotactic treatments than all other dedicated radiosurgery solutions combined. Brainlab technology is also utilized at 22 of the top 25 cancer programs in the United States and hundreds of other highly respected institutions worldwide. From teaching institutions to private centers and regional cancer clinics, the uncompromised approach to disease management can offer centers, at all levels, access to new and innovative approaches to collaborative cancer care.

The access that Brainlab provides in unlocking direct surgical referrals continues to provide the success of Novalis Radiosurgery programs and encourages a collaborative patient treatment approach. Benefitting from an integrated multidisciplinary treatment strategy, Novalis cranial and body radiosurgery treatments are crafted by a team of surgeons and radiation oncologists and aim to maximize functional retention and impact quality of life.

While Linac technology improvements may increase the quantity of patients treated, Brainlab and Novalis are focused on streamlining clinical workflows that help to redefine the quality of outcomes. The result is that more patients can benefit from access to this advanced approach. To support treatment consistency, the Novalis Circle Expert Group has established safety standards and a quality management program that can be applied by centers worldwide through Novalis Certified TM. As it continues to be embraced by more and more centers around the globe, the standardized approach aims to offer patients treated by Novalis Radiosurgery excellence in the quality of care provided, independent of the treatment location selected. Through workflow specific technologies developed around multi-disciplinary best practice groups, expert knowledge can be effectively shared among all Novalis centers. The final goal is to provide highly focused technologies with automated and innovative software approaches to improve treatment consistency and clinical implementation.

“Novalis Radiosurgery has been continually raising the bar in cancer care since 1997, and the beneficiaries have been our patients,” said Ronald E. Warnick, MD, neurosurgeon at Precision Radiotherapy and the Mayfield Clinic in Cincinnati. “Since our program began in 2003, the treatment paradigm has shifted numerous times as Brainlab expanded our clinical offerings with innovative software and treatment modalities. Brainlab has been a consistent partner in our program’s growth, and we are excited about future collaborations with other experts who share our passion for continuous clinical improvement.” As radiosurgery becomes clinical routine in an increasing number of centers beyond the traditional university hospital setting, it has also become a proven option to aggressive surgery as an isolated treatment. The successful implementation of radiosurgery programs is more than just a technological solution, but the fact that Novalis stands for the truly multidisciplinary approach that provides the foundation for clinical transformation.

“We are excited that Novalis centers now perform more than 200,000 treatments per year and believe that these centers not only offer a highly effective set of technology components, but provide impact on shaping and impacting cancer treatments,” says Stefan Vilsmeier, President and CEO, Brainlab. “Studies show that 1 out of 2 cancer patients can benefit from Novalis Radiosurgery, therefore I have no doubt that the treatment paradigm offered to patients and outcomes generated at Novalis centers will impact the lives of millions more over the coming years.”
