Depuy Synthes CMF Launches Integrated Offerings for Customized Facial Reconstruction

October 11, 2013 By DePuy Synthes CMF

TRUMATCH CMF Solutions Spans Preoperative Virtual Surgical Planning Services, Intraoperative Tools and Customized Implants

DePuy Synthes CMF (Craniomaxillofacial), a leader in skeletal and soft tissue repair and reconstruction and part of the DePuy Synthes Companies of Johnson & Johnson, announced the launch of TRUMATCH CMF Solutions for facial reconstruction, orthognathic surgery, distraction and cranial reconstruction.

The announcement was made here at the 2013 annual meeting of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), a professional organization representing more than 8,500 oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the United States.

TRUMATCH CMF Solutions includes preoperative planning services using proprietary computer software and consultation with a clinical engineering design team, intraoperative tools including surgical guides and occlusal splints, and customized implants designed to help surgeons achieve their goals of aesthetic results, procedural efficiency and patient satisfaction.

“TRUMATCH CMF Solutions offers a ‘one stop’ integrated approach for virtual surgical planning and fabrication of individualized implants for our patients requiring complex maxillofacial reconstructive procedures. This cutting edge technology has saved me many hours in the preparation and execution of surgical procedures, and has helped me to achieve the desired outcomes for my patients,” said Daniel Buchbinder, DMD, MD, Clinical Professor and Chief Division of Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Otolaryngology, Beth Israel Medical Center, New York.

Pre-operative Planning Services
The company’s ProPlan CMF, a virtual surgical planning service, provides 3D visualization of individual patient anatomy, helps surgeons identify potential surgical challenges, and simulates various approaches to skeletal osteotomies for harvest and relocation sites and reconstruction.

Experienced clinical engineers work with surgeons in live interactive sessions to assist in the development of a comprehensive pre-operative plan with objectives to optimize surgical time, reduce the number of procedural steps and achieve desired results. Anatomic bone models may be created from original patient CT scans or to the planned outcome, to provide tactile representation and to enhance patient communication.

Intraoperative Tools
DePuy Synthes CMF uses 3D printing, a type of additive manufacturing by which a digital file is translated into a physical object by a 3D printer to create patient-specific surgical guides and occlusal splints. This enables transfer of the preoperative plan to the operating room, potentially reducing OR time and assisting in the placement of implants.

Customized Implants
Customized craniofacial implants are derived from patient CT data to enable a better anatomic fit and lessen operating time when compared to conventional reconstruction methods that require extensive contouring.

TRUMATCH CMF Solutions
“TRUMATCH CMF Solutions integrates virtual surgical planning, intraoperative tools and patient-specific devices to enable surgeons to make highly informed critical clinical decisions before and during surgery with the goal of improving functional and aesthetic outcomes in patients,” said Mike Mazzio, Worldwide President, DePuy Synthes CMF. “In addition, TRUMATCH CMF addresses procedural efficiency and time spent in the OR, two very important issues for surgeons, hospitals and payers as they strive to improve quality and reduce costs.”

Maxillofacial (jaw and facial) surgery has increased over the last 10 years. According to American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 209,000 people had these surgeries in 2012.
