Device tolerance “stack up” can be a problem in many industries, but particularly in medical devices. One solution is the DuraGlide™ family of dry film lubricants. Custom-blended, this lubricant line helps ensure that many single-use medical devices are commercially viable. “DuraGlide improves the mechanical feel of the device, delivering a silky, almost effortless actuation that cannot be obtained any other way,” said Jay Tourigny, vice president of operations for MicroCare Medical.
With proprietary “microdispersion” PTFE technology, Duraglide dry film lubricants deposit a thin, smooth fast-drying film over a surface, reducing the force needed to actuate, or execute the device by 25 to 30%. The doctor reaps benefits from the coating in the smooth actuation of the finished device to complete a successful procedure.
Consistency in the coating is important. Coatings with many micropowders require constant agitation and often produce inconsistent, streaky coatings. DuraGlide lubricant microdispersions suspend the PTFE particle in unique carrier agents, creating a better, consistent coating and smoother movements.
Other benefits include its nonflammable handling, storage and use, excellent materials compatibility, and excellent environmental properties meeting Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations and U.S. EPA Significant New Alternatives Program (SNAP) approval.
These dry film lubricants are available custom blended for dip, spray and aerosol applications, and are used on devices or mechanical assemblies for the operating room that function outside of the body such as catheters, cutting tools, staplers, hypotubes, and other “surface to surface” complex assemblies.
