DTW Podcast: Boston Scientific working to close the equality gap

September 28, 2020 By Tom Salemi

Medtech companies made strong pledges to fight for racial equality following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Boston Scientific’s executive committee, including CEO Michael Mahoney, issued one of the earliest statements to condemn “injustice and discrimination and to reaffirm our commitment to live by our values and cultivate a workplace that makes equality, diversity and openness priorities—a workplace that sets an example for the greater community.”

In this week’s podcast, we’ll examine another long-time campaign Boston Scientific has been waging to battle another fatal form of unfairness — health care inequality.

In our keynote interview, Camille Chang Gilmore, Boston Scientific’s VP of human resources and global chief diversity officer, and Dr. Michael Jaff, CMO of its peripheral vascular group, reintroduce us to the company’s Close the Gap program.

Launched in 2006, Close the Gap seeks to address the lack of care being delivered to underserved populations, including people of color and people earning lower incomes. The two Boston Scientific executives will explain why Close the Gap is more essential than ever, and what the medical device industry needs to do to bring equality to care.

In our opening interview, prolific inventor and entrepreneur Dr. Jeff Karp shares his early challenges as a child when a learning difference limited his performance in school.

After hearing some stern advice from teachers, Karp identified the problem and explained how overcoming his challenges gave him the ability to see innovative ways to solve problems.
