Liquid Silicone Rubber Thin Walled Diaphragms for Healthcare Applications

July 18, 2014 By Jennifer Calhoon

Thin-walled diaphragms for medical devices require high strength and flexibility. To achieve these features, Minnesota Rubber and Plastics utilizes its 60 years of experience and advanced capabilities to custom design and injection mold liquid silicone rubber (LSR) thin walled diaphragms for demanding medical device applications. Utilizing these LSR processes, design function and cost efficiency is improved.

“Used in a broad range of healthcare related applications, including dispensing, fluid filtration, and fluid purification systems, thin-walled diaphragms are a pivotal part of many
medical product designs,” reports Aron Yngve Marketing Director of Minnesota Rubber and Plastics. “These seal applications require long term seal life because temperature variation and resistance to aging are extremely important in medical devices. Uninterrupted operation for extended periods is also extremely important.”

Advantages of LSR thin walled diaphragms from Minnesota Rubber and Plastics include heat resistance to +180°C and good flexibility down to -45°C. They also provide good electrical insulating characteristics and resist UV radiation and weathering. Additional advantages include a very clean molding process with no material pre-processing. Components can be molded with minimal flash, depending on part complexity. LSR material also has a repeatable, short cycle time enabling reduced or eliminated secondary operations. When compared to other materials and processes, LSR molding labor costs are usually lower due to reduced manufacturing steps.

Minnesota Rubber and Plastics is equipped to provide assistance with design and materials engineering from a broad range of medical grade material options. In addition to LSR, these include compounds compliant with ISO 10993, USP Class VI, and FDA requirements. MR&P operates an ISO 13485:2003 certified quality management system and manufactures a broad range of custom medical seals in Class 10,000 and Class 100,000 clean rooms.

In addition to manufacturing components and seals, Minnesota Rubber and Plastics’ precision molding capabilities comprise of silicone molding and bonding, processing of high-performance rubber and plastics, rubber-to-plastic conversions, and metal-to-plastic conversions. These capabilities include the manufacture of complete medical device and pharmaceutical products involving complex assembly through final packaging.
