Long Life 3.6 V Lithium Thionyl Chloride Cells from Tadiran

December 17, 2009 By Pat Curran

Port Washington, NY — Tadiran has developed long life 3.6 V lithium thionyl chloride cells capable of delivering continuous around-the-clock power for 20+ years in temperatures as low as -80°C. Currently utilized in data loggers and sensors, these batteries provide reliable power to ensure a continuous data stream to verify that consistent temperatures have been maintained in order to preserve tissue samples, transplant organs, and pharmaceuticals that are frozen or packed in dry ice. Batteries modified for the medical cold chain are available in 1/2AA, 2/3AA, AA, C, D and DD cylindrical cells, as well as wafer cells and battery packs.

Tadiran lithium thionyl chloride cells use a non-aqueous electrolyte that can withstand temperatures as low as -55oC., which is ideal for standard data loggers. Modified cells that can withstand -80oC. temperatures are ideal for sensors that require high capacity, high energy density and extremely long life in cold environments. These batteries feature:

– Higher voltage (3.6V)

– 2X the energy density of other leading chemistries

– Service life of 20+ years

– Small form factor

– Glass-to-metal hermetical seal (not crimped elastomer gasket)

– ISO-9001 certified and UL-recognized

The development of a long-life lithium battery designed for the medical industry cold chain is a major advancement, as continous data streams are essential to ensuring the data integrity, which is especially critical in situations where variance in temperatures can lead to spoilage or degradation that can compromise the validity of test results and/or increase safety risks.

Tadiran manufactures a complete line of lithium thionyl chloride batteries, including a variety of primary cylindrical batteries, Pulses PlusTM batteries for high current pulse applications, TLM Series for high power and high energy applications, TLH Series batteries for high temperature applications up to +125oC., coin-sized cells and custom battery packs. Tadiran products are available in a variety of terminations and assemblies.
